Don’t judge a book by its cover, nor should you judge an animal by its popular reputation.
It is no coincidence that the biggest villain in the Bible is a snake, or that St. Patrick is reputed to have driven them out of Ireland.
The snake represents the Feminine Divine. It is also a powerful healing symbol used in modern day as part of the caduceus to represent the western practice of medicine.
To justify invasions and massacres of peaceful pagans, the snake had to be painted as a symbol of the ultimate evil.
Snakes are instrumental in keeping the balance in nature. Without them, we would be overrun with harmful rodents, spreading disease and stealing food.
Snakes are graceful creatures who shed their skin when they have outgrown it. As we grow, spiritually, we do the same thing, recreating ourselves and removing what no longer serves us.
If snake is your totem animal, you, most likely, have an inclination to the healing arts and move smoothly through changes that come along.
Whatever you choose to celebrate (or not celebrate) today, do not malign the innocent snake. They too have their place in the Divine plan.
